Introduction to High-Temperature Glazes: 4-Session Workshop
This workshop is designed for beginners and ceramic enthusiasts ready to move beyond commercial glazes. The course focuses on the fundamentals of glaze chemistry, material science, and application techniques. Whether you want to troubleshoot consistent issues or begin developing your own signature finishes, this workshop provides the technical foundation needed to master high-temperature surfaces.
This course is kept intentionally small — limited to 6 participants — to ensure a hands-on, personalized experience where every student gets guidance, space to ask questions, and meaningful feedback.
The workshop takes place at my ceramics studio and Palácio Gama Lobo in Loulé. All necessary tools and materials will be provided.
Workshop Structure & Content
Session 1: Glaze Theory & Raw Materials An introduction to the anatomy of a glaze. We will identify the specific raw materials that dictate color, texture, and finish, and discuss how to achieve a stable, successful surface.
Session 2: Chemistry, Safety & The Kiln A technical look at the roles of fluxes, glass formers, and stabilizers. We will cover the differences between oxidation and reduction firings, understand firing schedules, and review essential studio safety and material handling.
Session 3: Application & Documentation Theory meets practice. You will learn how to prepare systematic glaze tests and explore various application methods—dipping, pouring, and brushing. We will also cover the importance of documentation for achieving consistent, repeatable results.
Analysis & Troubleshooting In our final session, we evaluate the fired test pieces. We will learn to identify and correct common glaze defects such as pinholing, crawling, and crazing, discussing how to adjust recipes and techniques to improve future outcomes.
Location & Logistics
Where: The workshop is split between the ceramics studio Oficina do Barro and Palácio Gama Lobo, Loulé.
What is Included: All raw materials, chemicals, test tiles, tools, and kiln firings are included in the price.
Language: Portuguese and/or English.
Preparation
As we will be handling raw powdered materials, safety is a priority. Please bring a well-fitting 3M particules mask for material mixing. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a notebook for documentation and chemistry notes.
Cancellation Policy Cancellations made within 48 hours of payment are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made up to 7 days before the first session will receive a 50% refund. No refunds or reschedules are possible for cancellations made within 7 days of the workshop start date.
